West Nile, Uganda. The Territorial Police in North West Nile Region and Adjumani CPS are conducting a serious manhunt for ASP Moses Acaye, a police officer attached to Alebtong district as the OC station.
The officer is wanted in connection with a revenge attack and murder by shooting of Omona Simon, a 24-year-old peasant from Lulayi village. The incident occurred on February 20, 2024, raising concerns about the abuse of police authority.
Revenge Attack, Murder
ASP Acaye reportedly left his station with a pistol and presented himself at Appa Police Station on February 20, 2024, to follow up on investigations into the murder of his brother, Emmanuel Opio.
Opio had met his demise at the hands of a mob on February 10, 2024. A member of the team responding to a sighting of one of the suspects in Apaa trading centre, Acaye allegedly drew his pistol and shot Omona Simon. The victim was rushed to a nearby clinic but succumbed to his injuries.
After the fatal shooting, ASP Acaye Moses reportedly handed over the pistol for safe custody at Lacor Hospital Police Post on February 24, 2022, and then disappeared.
A serious manhunt is now underway to locate and apprehend the suspect. The alleged perpetrator’s actions not only resulted in a senseless murder but also indicated a gross abuse of police authority and a departure from the sworn oath to protect and serve.
Regret, Apology
In a press release, the police expressed regret for the harm caused by one of their officers. The statement extended apologies to the victim’s family, friends, and relatives for the actions of ASP Acaye.
The police force assured that relentless efforts would be made to bring the suspect to justice and hold him accountable for the murder, as well as the theft of a police motorcycle.
