Police in Kampala have arrested three people following the recovery of live ammunition, imitation firearms, and tools believed to have been used in criminal activities in Makindye Division.
The suspects, identified as George Muwanga, Mashood Ahumuz, and Kethier Ishimwe, were apprehended during a police operation conducted on Thursday evening in Zikusooka Zone, Salaama.
The operation was launched after security agencies received reports from residents alleging that armed individuals were attacking members of the public in the area.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala, officers swiftly responded to the information and traced the suspects to a residence in the neighbourhood.
A search carried out at the premises resulted in the seizure of several items suspected to be linked to criminal activities.
Among the recovered exhibits were ten rounds of live ammunition, a toy pistol, a knife, a metallic torch, a screwdriver, a sensor device, test tubes, and a collection of implements commonly associated with housebreaking. The items were reportedly found inside a backpack recovered during the operation.
The three suspects were taken into custody and are currently being held at Katwe Police Division. Authorities have since opened investigations to establish how the ammunition was obtained and the specific role the recovered items may have played in alleged criminal operations.
Police have preferred charges related to possession of government stores as inquiries continue. Investigators are also pursuing leads that could help identify and apprehend other individuals believed to be connected to the group.
The arrests come amid intensified intelligence-led security operations across the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Security agencies say the ongoing crackdowns are aimed at dismantling criminal gangs involved in offences such as robbery, housebreaking, vandalism, phone theft, and the distribution and abuse of narcotics.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander ACP Ezekiel Emitu Ebapu has previously stated that the operations are designed to improve public safety and curb the activities of organized criminal networks operating within the city and its surrounding areas.
Police have urged members of the public to continue sharing information that can assist security agencies in preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice.
