Members of the newly formed opposition political party, the Democratic Front (DF), have convened in Masaka City for their first National Delegates Conference aimed at electing the party’s substantive leadership.
The conference is taking place at Laston Gardens, drawing delegates from across the country who represent the coordination units recently established by the party.
The Democratic Front was officially unveiled in May this year following the rebranding of the Green Partisan Party (GPP), which had remained relatively obscure on the political scene.
The party emerged from internal disagreements within the National Unity Platform (NUP), particularly between the top party leadership and Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Dr. Abed Bwanika, the Kimanya-Kabonera Division MP and DF coordinator in Masaka, said the party is now ready to elect its first formal leadership as it positions itself for the upcoming general elections.
“This conference is not only about electing leaders. It is also a platform to unveil our strategic direction as we prepare for national influence,” Bwanika said.
He noted that the DF has invited speakers from various political parties to contribute to discussions on the current political landscape and pathways toward democratic transition.
Joseph Kasirye, the Organising Secretary of the Delegates Conference, said the party’s constitution will also be presented to members during the event.
He emphasized that this will help build members’ confidence and readiness for future political engagements.
Proscovia Kiruba, a delegate from Kasese District, expressed optimism about the conference outcomes, saying she and other members are eager to understand the new direction the party intends to take — one that distinguishes DF from other opposition forces in Uganda.
