A Chinese construction company, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), is under scrutiny after allegedly concealing the death of a casual labourer working on a road construction site in Mukono Municipality.

The incident, which took place last Friday at Cathedral Rise, claimed the life of a worker identified as Ambrose.

According to local sources, the worker was struck by a tractor that failed to control its movement, causing the vehicle to bump into him and squeeze him into a trench.

Despite the tragic accident, CCCC did not report the incident to the police.

Ambrose’s body was quietly taken to Kabaale for burial, and the construction company suspended work for the day, resuming operations on Monday without further comment on the incident.

The lack of transparency has sparked outrage in the local community.

Many have criticized the company for exposing workers to dangerous conditions without providing adequate safety gear.

“It’s a tragedy that this could happen, and it’s even worse that it wasn’t reported properly,” said a local resident.

Efforts to reach the project manager, Qin Weidong, for comment have been unsuccessful.

His phone has remained off since the incident occurred, raising further concerns about the company’s handling of the matter.

CCCC has also come under fire for delays in the road construction project, which has been ongoing for several months.

The company, awarded a UGX46 billion contract to construct roads including the Wantoni-Kame, Kame Annex, Albert-Cook Road, Cathedral Rise, and Kame-Katosi Road, was given a period of 18 months to complete the work.

However, with only one year left to go, little progress has been made on the majority of the road stretches.

Mukono Municipal officials and consultants have expressed frustration with the slow pace of construction, adding to the growing pressure on the company to address both the safety concerns and delays in the project.

As investigations into the worker’s death continue, local authorities are urging the construction company to provide a full report of the incident and take responsibility for its actions.
