Mbarara Chief Magistrate on Wednesda granted bail to Doreen Atwongyirwe, a lecturer at Bishop Stuart University, who faces charges of causing grievous harm to her maid.
Atwongyirwe appeared before Chief Magistrate Andrew Kabombo and presented three sureties.
Her lawyer, Kentaro Sumaya, informed the court that a consensus had been reached between the complainant and the accused regarding the coverage of medical bills and additional care.
“Your Worship, when my client was arrested, she was taking care of the complainant out of humanity, and by the time she was remanded, they had agreed that she would continue to meet the medical bills and care, so she can’t fulfil the obligation when in prison,” Sumaya stated.
Atwongyirwe was granted cash bail of UGX 1.5 million, while her sureties were required to provide non-cash bail of 10 million each.
In granting bail to Atwongyirwe, Kabombo noted that the victim had requested her tormentor’s release on bail so that she could continue funding her medical treatment, as she had agreed to provide financial support for her treatment and care.
Atwongyirwe, a resident of Katete Central Cell, was arrested earlier this month and charged with grievous harm under Section 199(a) of the Penal Code Act.
She had been remanded to Mbarara Main Prison. According to court documents, on 25th September 2024, while in Katete Central Cell, Katete Ward, Mbarara City South Division, Atwongyirwe allegedly poured hot water on her maid, Racheal Ninsiima, with the intent to cause serious bodily harm.
Kabombo adjourned the case until 3rd December 2024, when the hearing will commence.
