Scandal at IUIU: Registrar Under Fire Over Alleged Fake Degrees

May 19, 2025

Police in Mbale district have confirmed that two students have tragically died by hanging themselves. As they investigate what strange happened, both grieving families and the community are struggling to cope with the sad loss of these students.

The first incident, which occurred on August 18, 2023, shook the community to its core. Alex Wadada, a 23-year-old second-year student at the Mount Elgon School of Nursing and Midwifery, was discovered lifeless in the institution’s toilet.

His life had ended tragically, as he was found hanging from the roof using his vest. The initial shock of the discovery was only exacerbated by the realisation that Alex had allegedly taken his own life.

It was a fellow student who stumbled upon this harrowing scene, a moment that would forever be etched in their memory.

The Eastern regional police surgeon, ACP Dr Barnabas Rubanza , confirmed that the postmortem results pointed to suicide as the cause of death.

As the investigation continues, questions linger about what could have driven a promising student like Alex to such a desperate act.

The grief was far from over for the Mbale community as another tragic incident unfolded on the same day. A 17-year-old student, Kimayo Emmanuel, from Busiu Secondary School, met a similarly distressing fate.

The young boy had allegedly been cautioned by his mother, Akidingi Serina, to stop smoking opium.

However, by 11 p.m. on that fateful night, he was discovered lifeless in his parents’ home in Bulusamba village, Busiu Sub-county.

His life was extinguished by an electric wire, a grim testament to the anguish he must have felt. Kimayo Emmanuel had been a student in S.3 at Busiu Secondary School.

The police have initiated a thorough investigation into Kimayo’s death, code-named Mbale District DEF11/2023, to uncover the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.

The news of these suicides left the community shocked, raising concerns about the mental well-being of young students in Mbale.

Tragically, these are not isolated incidents. Since February of the same year, four students have lost their lives to suicide, painting a chilling picture of a youth population in crisis.

Among them were Kaptire Fred, a student pursuing a diploma at IUIU Mbale Campus, and Mukite Immaculate, an 18-year-old student in S.3 at Magale Secondary School in Namisindwa District.

The gravity of the situation cannot be overstated. It is a collective responsibility to address this alarming trend, and it necessitates the cooperation of all stakeholders. The call goes out to religious leaders, the media, NGOs, healthcare professionals, political leaders, and the entire community.

Together, they must work tirelessly to understand the root causes of this distressing trend, provide support to struggling students, and ensure that no more young lives are lost to such tragic circumstances.

As the investigations into these heartbreaking incidents continue, the community in Mbale stands united in their grief, determined to prevent further loss and support their youth in finding hope and solace in these trying times.

END
