Recovered vehicle.

The Uganda Police Force has successfully recovered a stolen vehicle using the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), highlighting its commitment to leveraging technology for enhanced public safety.

The vehicle, a Toyota Fielder with digital number plate UA812AW, was reported stolen on May 26, 2025, from Buloba, a suburb located along Mityana Road in Kampala.

The distressed owner quickly filed a report at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala, triggering a swift and coordinated response by law enforcement.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Micheal Kananura, the Community Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the report was immediately communicated to the ITMS command center (@itmsug), which launched a real-time search operation.

Leveraging its advanced tracking capabilities, the ITMS system was able to locate the vehicle near Ntawo in Mukono District, at coordinates latitude 0.392533 and longitude 32.736718.

Acting on this intelligence, a police response team was dispatched to the scene, where they successfully recovered the stolen vehicle.

“The Intelligent Transport System is not only instrumental in improving road safety but also plays a vital role in enhancing public security and combating vehicle-related crimes,” SP Kananura stated.

The case marks a significant milestone for ITMS, an innovative surveillance and tracking network that integrates GPS, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and real-time data feeds to aid in traffic management and crime prevention.

Its growing influence in urban and peri-urban crime fighting efforts is being hailed by both security experts and citizens.

Rapid Response, Real Results

SP Kananura commended the seamless cooperation between the vehicle owner, police officers, and the ITMS team.

He emphasized the importance of timely reporting in such incidents, noting that it dramatically increases the chances of recovering stolen property.

“We commend the swift coordination between the public, Police, and ITMS that led to this successful recovery,” Kananura said.

“We urge the public to always report such incidents promptly to the nearest police station to facilitate immediate tracking and recovery.”

A Call to Embrace Smart Security

Echoing this sentiment, Ayesiga Priscah Pearl, Public Relations and Communications Officer, noted that this recovery showcases how technology can empower communities.

“In the event of a lost or stolen vehicle or motorcycle, it is crucial to report the incident immediately to the nearest police station,” Pearl noted.

“Prompt reporting enables the police to register the case with the CID and begin investigations right away, significantly increasing the chances of recovery. Your timely action can make all the difference in helping us track and return your vehicle to its rightful owner.”

Pearl further urged vehicle owners to consider installing ITMS-compatible tracking devices to enhance security.

Accordingly, not only do these systems provide peace of mind, but they also serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals who are increasingly aware of the police force’s growing surveillance capabilities.

A New Era in Law Enforcement

The successful operation in Mukono is more than just a victory over a single incident of theft—it is a symbol of Uganda’s evolving approach to public safety.

As the country continues to integrate advanced technology into its law enforcement infrastructure, tools like ITMS are becoming indispensable assets in the fight against crime.

This incident also sets a clear precedent: technology, when paired with proactive community involvement and timely reporting, can transform the landscape of security in Uganda.

As urban centers expand and crime patterns evolve, the need for intelligent, adaptive, and responsive policing strategies is more urgent than ever.

The Mukono recovery stands as a shining example of what’s possible when innovation meets action.
