The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has remanded Paul Wamana a Theatre Assistant at Arua Regional Hospital to Luzira Prison on charges of corruption having solicited and received a bribe to operate a baby.

Wamana a resident of Anzuu Cell, Ayivu West Division in Arua City, on Tuesday afternoon, was arraigned before the Court presided over by Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe and charged with two counts of corruption.

The Court has heard that on May 22nd, 2022, at Arua Regional Hospital in Arua City, Wamana being a public official employed as a Theatre Assistant by the Ministry of Health in the performance of his public function solicited for the gratification of 210,000 shillings from Viola Joy Joseph.

This was allegedly in exchange for performing a surgical operation on her child  Aron Nabil Bashir.

Wamana has denied the charges consented to by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The Prosecution’s Nicholas Kawoya has informed the Court that he is not the prosecutor in this case and therefore asked the Court for an adjournment to enable the line prosecutor to update the court on the status of investigations.

Wamana asked the Court to stand over the proceedings to enable his relatives to come to court and stand surety for him in vain.

The Court granted him a standover of 20 minutes but afterward sent him to Luzira Prison until March 26th, 2024 after his relatives failed to show up.

He denied the charges although he kept saying he should be permitted to say something concerning the accusations against him. The court couldn’t grant him this permission but instead to record a plea.
