The Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has remanded Superintendent of Police (SP) Avito Begira on charges of theft involving construction materials, including two spades.
Begira, a Human Resource Officer attached to the Wamala Region and a resident of Lunya Zone in Makindye Ssabagabo, Wakiso District, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Igga Adiru. He faces a single count of theft.
According to the prosecution, on February 10, 2023, at Kanaaba Zone in Makindye Ssabagabo, Begira allegedly stole 380 iron sheets, 250 poles, 15 bags of cement, a gate, 20 kilograms of nails, two spades, two hammers, and two pit saws.
The items are valued at 16,615,000 shillings and are said to belong to a man identified as Kato Bumali.
Begira denied the charges and was remanded until June 19, 2025, as investigations continue.
His arrest was carried out by fellow police officers in collaboration with detectives from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, which is headed by Brigadier Henry Isoke.
The arrest followed a complaint filed by the alleged victim, Kato.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that Begira and Kato are involved in an ongoing land dispute in Ndejje.
It is alleged that after Kato delivered building materials to the disputed site, Begira hired individuals, including some police officers, to remove the materials from the premises.
A statement from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit indicated that Begira had been summoned several times by his superiors to respond to the allegations.
However, he failed to appear, which led to his eventual arrest.
