Police in Kitgum District have arrested a 23-year-old man accused of killing his friend following a disagreement over a UGX 15,000 debt.
The suspect, identified as Byamagero Mustapha Muwaya, a resident of Anoyi Village in Labongo Amida West Sub-county, is alleged to have fatally assaulted Isaac Lutasingwa, 29, during a heated altercation.
According to Aswa East Regional Police Spokesperson, Joe Oloya, the dispute arose after Lutasingwa demanded repayment of money he had given Byamagero to help fence their kraal.
When the suspect failed to return the money, a quarrel reportedly broke out between the two men.
“The suspect picked up an axe and struck the victim in the stomach,” Oloya said.
“Lutasingwa was rushed to Yotkom Medical Centre in Kitgum Municipality, but sadly, he died before receiving treatment.”
Byamagero is currently being held at Kitgum Central Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities have opened a case of murder by assault.
Oloya appealed to the public to remain calm and urged community members to resolve conflicts peacefully through dialogue and local leadership structures.
Police have pledged a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
