Mukono District LC5 Chairperson, Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, has dismissed his deputy, Hajji Asuman Muhumuza, in a move widely interpreted as politically strategic ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Muhumuza, who represented the elderly at the district council, has been replaced by Jerome Kabali, the councilor for Nagojje Sub-county.

The decision comes at a critical time, as political realignments shape Mukono’s leadership landscape.

Political Calculations?

Political analysts suggest the shake-up is a calculated maneuver by Bakaluba, who is rumored to be strategizing for re-election.

Despite appointing  Muhumuza as head of government business at the district, Bakaluba faced intense criticism from his own party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), for selecting a deputy from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Sources within NUP indicate that Bakaluba was previously summoned by the party leadership over his political decisions.

The dismissal of Muhumuza is therefore seen as an attempt to regain favor within NUP ahead of the crucial party primaries.

A Rift in the Opposition?

The reshuffle raises questions about Rev. Bakaluba’s political stance, especially given his previous praise for President Yoweri Museveni’s role in funding service delivery in Mukono.

This has fueled speculation about his loyalties among opposition supporters.

Muhumuza , a veteran politician with over 30 years in the district council, had served twice as vice chairperson, first under Francis Lukooya Mukoome, who is now seeking an NRM ticket to reclaim the LC5 chairmanship.

Political observers suggest Bakaluba may have feared an alliance between  Muhumuza and his former boss, given their shared party affiliation and history of attending strategic meetings together.

Public Reaction

While some NUP supporters have welcomed the changes as a political realignment, critics argue that Bakaluba has risked alienating the Muslim community, where  Muhumuza enjoyed significant support.

At the same time, youth groups have expressed enthusiasm over the appointment of a younger vice chairperson, seeing it as an opportunity for fresh leadership to complement the aging district chairperson.

With elections on the horizon, Mukono’s political landscape remains dynamic, and all eyes are on Bakaluba as he navigates his re-election bid within a divided opposition.
