Police in Busoga East have arrested Mohammad Kafuko, a National Unity Platform (NUP) mobilizer in Iganga Municipality, for leading a cleaning exercise in the town without prior approval from authorities.
Kafuko reportedly mobilized a group of youths on Tuesday to carry out a general cleaning in Nkono Cell and along Saza Road in Northern Division.
Dressed in NUP-branded attire and armed with brooms, the group chanted slogans in praise of Kafuko while calling on residents to support their cause.
The exercise briefly disrupted traffic as participants placed barricades on roads and diverted vehicles, drawing in some members of the public who joined the clean-up.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Kafuko said he organized the initiative in response to what he described as the municipal authorities’ failure to manage garbage, which he claimed was littering the town’s streets.
He added that the activity was voluntarily supported by well-wishers and publicized through social media platforms.
However, officers from the Field Force Unit (FFU) intervened, instructing the group to stop the activity until they received proper clearance.
Despite the warning, the group resumed cleaning along Iganga Main Street, leading to confrontations with security personnel.
Busoga East Police Spokesperson Michael Kafayo said the group’s actions disrupted public order and drew complaints from residents and municipal officials, who said no permission had been granted for the activity.
He noted that what began as a cleaning exercise had turned into political mobilization, interfering with normal business operations.
Kafayo added that minimum force was used to restore calm, resulting in Kafuko’s arrest. He is currently being held at Iganga Central Police Station and faces charges of being a public nuisance and disobeying lawful orders.
