Muhoozi Says Museveni Ordered Release, Forgiveness Of Anita Among

Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the release of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among from house arrest and decided that she should not face prosecution over allegations of corruption.

Gen. Muhoozi, in a post on his official X account, said the President, whom he referred to as “Mzee,” had directed him to release Among, popularly known as AAA.

“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Gen. Muhoozi wrote.

In a separate response to a social media user who asked whether Among would be prosecuted, Gen. Muhoozi said the President had chosen to forgive her despite acknowledging that she had made mistakes.

“No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” he said.

The remarks have triggered debate over the handling of corruption allegations involving senior public officials and the extent to which political decisions should influence investigations and prosecutions.

Among had stepped aside from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid investigations into allegations relating to corruption, wealth declaration and the financial management of Parliament.

Her reported arrest in mid-May 2026 had also attracted considerable public attention, with questions raised over the circumstances surrounding the investigations and the government’s broader campaign against corruption.

Gen. Muhoozi’s latest statements now appear to signal a major shift in the handling of the case, with the President reportedly opting for forgiveness rather than prosecution.

The development is likely to renew questions about accountability, equality before the law and the independence of institutions mandated to investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences.

ENDS.
