Shock and grief have gripped residents of Bushenyi District following the grim discovery of the body of former Chief Finance Officer, Abias Asiimwe, on his own property after he had been reported missing.
Asiimwe, who disappeared on April 18, had sparked concern among family members who spent two days searching and hoping for his safe return.
Their hopes were shattered when police, aided by a canine unit, uncovered his remains under disturbing circumstances within a lodge located inside his compound.
Investigators found the body severely mutilated and burnt, with some body parts concealed in the ceiling of one of the rooms, a scene that has left both relatives and the wider community in deep shock.
The Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed that the case began as a missing person report filed at Kashenyi Police Post after Asiimwe was last seen at Kashenyi Trading Centre. He added that preliminary findings point to suspected foul play, though full details remain under investigation.
Police have since taken into custody the owner of the lodge along with six other individuals believed to have information that could aid the inquiry. Authorities have, however, remained tight-lipped about the possible motive as detectives continue to reconstruct Asiimwe’s final movements.
At the family home, mourning is intertwined with unanswered questions and growing suspicion. Nelson Atwine, the deceased’s brother, revealed that investigators had cautioned them against publicly naming a key individual they suspect could be linked to the killing.
He suggested that a longstanding disagreement over rent payments may have escalated into violence, urging police to thoroughly examine that angle.
Asiimwe, remembered as both a former public servant and an entrepreneur, was widely known in his community. His sudden and brutal death has not only devastated his family but also raised concern among residents about safety and justice.
His remains have been taken to Kitagata Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination as preparations for burial begin. For now, those close to him are left grappling with a painful loss and a lingering question over what led to such a tragic end.
