MUKONO, Seven suspects accused of murdering former Compassion International Uganda official, Godfrey Wayengera, 45, were remanded to Luzira Prison after appearing before Mukono Grade One Magistrate Elizabeth Peace Lamunu.
The suspects — Asharaf Tumusiime, 40, alias Obadia of Ntungamo; Fahad Kasolo, 30, of Iganga; Mike Ssentaza, 40, alias Mwagamwaga of Wakiso; Sgt. Muhammad Mwesigye, 54, alias Jet Lee, a deserter from the UPDF based in Fort Portal; Cpl. Mugabe Boban, attached to the UPDF Military Police at Kololo; Keeya Derrick of Ntenjeru, Mukono; and Dauda Kyangwe — were charged with murder, kidnapping, and aggravated robbery. Several other accomplices remain at large.

The group was presented to court under heavy security after being held at Mukono Police Station, where they were interrogated by the Regional CID officer. They were later driven to court in a police van surrounded by officers from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JAT).
The court session was marked by emotional scenes, with Wayengera’s widow, Miriam Wayengera, and other family members breaking down in tears. Some relatives required support to remain standing as the charges were read out.
Court documents allege that on June 9, 2025, at Nsuube A village in Mukono Central Division, the suspects — armed with a toy pistol and sticks — kidnapped Wayengera and Christine Najjabi.
They are accused of fatally assaulting Wayengera and robbing the victims of valuables, including Wayengera’s Samsung SMA256E phone worth Sh1.3 million and a Dell Latitude 5420 laptop worth Sh3 million. Najjabi’s Tecno Spark phone, valued at Sh80,000, was also stolen.
Senior Resident State Attorney Emily Ninsiima informed the court that investigations are still ongoing. Magistrate Lamunu remanded the suspects until August 7, 2025, for mention, noting that her court lacks jurisdiction to try capital offenses.
“This court cannot hear your case. However, you have the right to apply for bail from the High Court,” the magistrate told the accused.

The suspects were apprehended from various parts of the country following a directive by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to ensure that the killers of Wayengera are brought to justice.
Wayengera was reportedly kidnapped and killed while returning from a burial. He was attacked near the CCCC site by men dressed in security uniforms.
The deceased was the director of Beloved Daycare and Nursery School in Nsuube and a prominent leader at St. Hannington Church of Uganda.
