Police in Fort Portal City are investigating the death of a 17-year-old student of St. Leo’s College, Kyegobe, who is suspected to have died by suicide.
The deceased, identified as Douglas Ahurra, a Senior Three student, reportedly left home on Wednesday evening after telling his mother that he was going to collect firewood from a nearby valley.
According to Rwenzori West Regional Police Spokesperson Vincent Twesige, Ahurra had earlier returned from church at around 6:00 p.m. before untying a rope from a cow and heading towards a eucalyptus plantation in the valley.
“Minutes later, he was discovered hanging from a tree in a neighbour’s garden,” Twesige said.
He added that police have since recorded statements from witnesses and opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
