The head of the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) School of Leadership in Kamwokya, Doreen Kaija, has been remanded to Luzira prison after being charged with offenses linked to military training and running an unlicensed school.
Kaija, aged 27, was picked up by security operatives from her Kinawataka residence in Mbuya, Nakawa Division, over the weekend.
She was produced at the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where she appeared on an amended charge sheet as the tenth accused, with an extra count added to her case.
Her remand places her alongside senior party figures already in custody, including NUP deputy spokesperson Waisswa Mufumbiro, mobilizer Saudah Madada, and long-time Kyagulanyi aides Edward Ssebufu (alias Eddie Mutwe), Achielo Kivumbi, and Calvin Tasi (alias Bobi Giant). Several other party supporters are also co-accused.
The prosecution claims that on February 12, 2024, at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, Kawempe Division, Kaija and her co-accused convened a meeting without authorization from the Minister.
Authorities allege the gathering’s purpose was to conduct military-style drills, a violation of Section 45(1)(b) of the Penal Code Act.
In addition, Kaija is charged with operating an unregistered institution.
According to Prosecutor Sharon Nambuya, she has been running a school since 2020 that lacks official registration, contravening Section 41(a) of the Education Act.
All ten suspects have denied the charges before Grade One Magistrate Damalie Agumaasiimwe.
The court has scheduled September 29 as the date when prosecution will respond to their bail applications, which will determine whether they remain behind bars or secure temporary release.
