Confirmed: FDC-Katonga Faction Reserves Name for New Political Party

The Katonga faction of FDC has applied to the Electoral Commission-EC seeking to reserve a name People’s Front for Freedom-PFF.

The move marks the beginning of another splinter group from the Forum For Democratic Change (FDC).

The FDC was the largest opposition political party in the country following the return to a multiparty system.

In 2019, Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Retired Gen, Gregory Mugisha Muntu formed the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) after parting ways with FDC. He left with

Alice Alaso, the former Secretary General of FDC, and Winnie Kiiza, the former Leader of the Opposition.

The Katonga-based faction has the former FDC Party President and Presidential candidate, Dr. Kiiza Besigye as the de facto leader.

Others behind it include Ambassador Waswa Birigwa, Kampala Lord Mayor, Elia Lukwago, and some of the founders of the FDC party.

The group following a delegates’ conference decide to dissolve the FDC and form another political force.

A team of leaders from FDC Katonga, headed by Ingrid Turinawe, the faction’s Mobilization Chairperson, delivered the application documents to the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala.

According to Ingrid Turinawe, the next phase of their strategy involves launching a nationwide mass mobilization campaign to rally supporters and distribute party membership cards to enthusiasts across the country.

The Katonga group on Tuesday asked the Electoral Commission to reserve People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) as the name for the new party.

It also chose a phone as its party symbol and the slogan will be “Freedom for all and all for Freedom.

The new party has also selected royal blue and white as its colors.

“In compliance with the provisions of Sections 6 and 7 of the Political Parties and Organizations Act, we respectfully submit this application for registration of the aforementioned political party. A letter addressed to the Electoral Commission reads.”

Julius Mucunguzi, the E.C. spokesperson, confirmed receipt of the application and stated that the commission will proceed to scrutinize the submitted documents to ensure compliance with requirements, after which a formal response will be communicated to the applicant group.

“What is being done is in accordance with the Political Party and Organizations Act of 2025, guiding anybody or group of individuals that intend to form and register a political party or. The people who have come have been guided on the process of applying. And it has been received.” Muchunguzi said.

Katonga faction interim President, Alias Lukwago, said within the next six months they will have officially parted ways with the faction headed by Patrick Amuriat, or what is known as the Najanankumbi faction.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, one the Katonga faction leaders, has consistently said that while they are discussing the next course of action, they should know the main goal which is deliberating for the country to acquire its sovereignty which Ugandans have never experienced since Independence.
