The massive procession of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu the National Unity Presidential Candidate-NUP caused traffic jam on all the roads designated for him to reach the nomination ground at Kyambogo.
The procession also left most of the businesses closed for hours. Security designated routes from Kyagulanyi’s home to Mbuzi along Gayaza road go through Ntinda, Kisaasi, Stretcher Road, Spear Motors and connect to Kyambogo University junction.
However, the entire route got covered by supporters designed in red colours waiting for him on the road for hours contrary to what happened during the nomination of Yoweri Museveni.
Kyagulanyi together with his wife waved to the public until they reached the nomination ground, a respect no candidate received on the first nomination day.
Supporters could not resist chanting of many different songs of hope Whenever, he passed, his supporters followed him making the procession bigger.
At various centers, all vehicles were forced to stop for over 30 minutes until Kyagulanyi’s convoy traversed. Police and the army fired tear gas to disperse them but in vain.
Many businesses have been forced to close after people trying to enter into people’s shops running away from tear gas. Zawedde Maliga a retailer shop owner noted that closing their shops has been one way of saving their businesses.
David Ssebamala says this election period is hard for business people but they will try all means of survival. He notes that police will stop to go against opposition candidates in whichever place they will convene meeting or canvass for votes.
After his nomination, Kyagulanyi has been arrested by police, this has not only happened to him alone but also Patrick Amuriat the FDC Party flag bearer was also arrested in the morning a head of nomination.
