RAKAI. The Rakai District Chairperson Robert Benon Mugabi survived lynching by an angry mob this week while trying to pass on makeshift bridge set up by community members at Kayayumbe village in Lwanda Sub County.
Mugabi who was heading to his home at Lwamaggwa used the route from Lwanda-Nsozibbiri to connect through Buyamba trading center after Lumbugu-Buyamba road submerging into water from Lake Kijjanebarola.
Unfortunately, Mugabi found residents at the bridge who asked him to contribute shillings 5,000 as a way of supporting the work before he claimed that he run out of money which annoyed residents. The order was that only people who contributed towards the work could be allowed to go.
Residents pilled woods in the road blocking the district chairperson which compelled him to get out of the vehicle and tried lifting them away but this almost brought up a scuffle between him and residents.
Mugabi’s bodyguard decided to pull out a gun from the vehicle to scare away the angry residents but they instead made a loud alarm that attracted more people which caused more havoc.
After sometime, residents gave out another option to the chairperson of writing an agreement pledging to send the money immediately he reaching home which he declined. Mugabi later made a telephone asking a colleague to send him shillings 50, 000 to appreciate the work done by the community which cooled the residents down.
Residents allowed him to go as they reminded him to ensure that their roads get into into good condition for their business to thrive in the community if they are to have a good leaving.
