The release of a hotel manager, who stands accused of murdering his wife, has sparked protests from the deceased’s family and friends. It has also raised questions about the credibility of the criminal justice system.

Paul Musisi, a 28-year-old individual, is the suspect in question, serving as the manager of Muzza Hotel in Mukono town. The victim in this case is his late wife, Shadia Nangobi.

Musisi, a resident of Namubiru Village in Nama sub-county, was initially arrested on November 27, 2023, in connection with the death of his wife. He was released later on December 2, 2023.

Although the bond is considered a legal right in many jurisdictions, as it is linked to the broader principle of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the circumstances surrounding his release have left the public in disbelief.

The family of the deceased, led by Shadia’s father, Sadah Karimu, alleges that the police have conspired with Musisi to obstruct justice.

According to Karimu, during the examination of Shadia’s body before burial, they discovered disturbing details.

The body reportedly lacked a tongue, and private parts showed deep cuts, with a piece of cloth forcibly placed inside. These revelations have intensified suspicions and fueled the family’s accusations against Musisi.

In Musisi’s statement to the police, on the night of November 26, 2023, he returned home and found no response from his wife.

He returned the next morning, and broke into their home, only to discover Shadia’s lifeless body in one of the bedrooms. Musisi promptly reported the incident to the police.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, stated that upon police examination, it was suspected that Shadia might have been strangled, leading to her death.

The body was subsequently taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem. According to Onyango, the postmortem report indicated that Shadia died of suffocation.

Despite the apparent evidence pointing to a suspicious death, the sequence of events takes a bewildering turn with Musisi’s release. Onyango explained that the case file was submitted to the State Attorney, who advised further inquiries.

The State Attorney recommended retrieving a toxicology report from the forensic laboratory before resubmitting the file for guidance.

However, the family of the deceased claims they were not informed about Musisi’s release and accuses the police of failing to update them on the investigation’s findings.

However, the family members of the deceased contend that Musisi’s release has the potential to interfere with ongoing investigations, and they express concern that justice for their daughter may not be served.

Anonymous police sources disclosed that a senior officer from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), along with members of the district security committee, influenced Musisi’s release.

Allegedly, this influential team has engaged with the State Attorney’s office to navigate the legal proceedings.

The suspect’s background adds another layer of complexity to the case. Musisi is the son of Wilson Mukiibi Muzzanganda, a prominent Mengo royalist and businessman in Kikuubo.

Muzzanganda’s considerable wealth has seemingly played a role in supporting efforts to clear his son of all accusations.

Community sentiments reflect a mixed reaction to Musisi’s release. While some express concerns about the circumstances, others within the Mukono community are not necessarily against the release but demand transparency in the process.

There is a growing call for the police to update the bereaved family on all findings from the investigation.

Efforts to contact Musisi since his release have been unsuccessful, as he reportedly went into hiding.

As the controversy surrounding this case deepens, it raises profound questions about the fairness and transparency of the criminal justice system in Uganda.

The community awaits further developments as authorities navigate the particulars of this unsettling case.
